Special attacks: pins (1)

Your already have a lot of great tools in your chess toolbox. We are going to add another one: the pin.

Pins are real power moves! A pin is an attack on a piece that is unable to move away. Should it move to safety, a piece behind it gets into trouble.

Study examples 1 and 2. In both, White takes a knight by means of a pin. But the way he does it is different.

How do you spot a pin? Look for pieces (or a piece and a mating square) on the same file, rank or diagonal. Found them? Move your piece to that file, rank or diagonal as well and (safely!) attack the piece in front.

Pin one of your opponent’s pieces and win points.
